The Evil Within :: Shinji Mikami Takes Survival Horror Back To Its Roots!
“Survival horror as a genre is becoming all action now and there aren’t any real survival horror games in the world right now. That is the biggest motivation for me.” — Shinji Mikami, Resident Evil Creator
Where to begin with this one. When the creator of one of the most pivotal survival horror franchises of all time points out that the genre as a whole has veered away from its roots, you know something is wrong. It’s time to SMASH THE RESET BUTTON, disembowel the genre, then served up as freshly hacked slab of hemorrhaging flesh on a silver plate. This is just what Shinji Mikami and his creative team at Tango Gameworks have been doing with their upcoming release: The Evil Within: tapping into and revisiting the deepest caverns of pure horror.
Now, it’s been a long time since I’ve gotten the creeps from playing a video game—matter of fact, I kind of lost interest with the whole genre around 2002 (and I do miss the heyday of Silent Hill and Resident Evil 2)—but all I can say is that this teaser demo for TEW looks absolutely terrifying.
Aside from being wooed by visuals so barbarically vivid and chilling, the most perplexing questions I found myself asking over and over again were:
“What in the hell is going on?”
“Why is this happening?”
“How the f***k did my character, Sebastian Castellanos, get in this mess (and how does he get out)?
Indeed there is much in the way of mysteries to be unraveled and questions answered as the game plays out which I think is one of the game’s finest attractions. The Butcher, another frightening aspect of TEW, (featured in video) is purported to pursue Sebastian throughout the game, no doubt surprising him when he least expects it. This reminds me of how the Tyrant (T-00) would stalk after Leon in RE2. I’d nearly soil myself every time that bastard appeared. Perhaps it’s a poisonous cocktail of Leatherface meets T-o0 with a sprinkling of Hostile (2005) in the mix. Oh the anxiety!
So, will you guys be picking this up badboy in 2014 once it’s released or will you be too scared and hide under your Hello Kitty blankie?
